|Welcome to Yellowthreads Treat, a portrayal
of the Island tramway within the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region
of the People's Republic of China. Hong Kong Tramways is the only
exclusively double-decker operated tram system in the World and the
models featured are mostly from the obsolete Peak Horse range (and its
successor, 80M), which have been motorised using Halling mechanisms.
These are complemented by the finescale ready-to-run offerings from
Bachmann (China). The exhibit was
originally conceived to provide a suitable environment through which I
could run the superb Bachmann model, and to demonstrate a more
accessible approach to representing a model tramway in terms of the
better availability and lesser expense of the proprietary rolling stock,
compared to that in use on "Hasselhof(f)", my first foray into
exhibiting a working model tramway, without compromising on the quality.
Indeed, two replica cars based on the post-war 1949 traditional design
(also constructed by Hong Kong Tramways) can often be seen in service in
Birkenhead, on the Wirral Transport Museum - Woodside Ferry line.
The name "Yellowthreads Treat"
incidentally, is derived from "Yellowthread Street", a 1990
ITV police drama about the detectives of the Royal Hong Kong Police,
based on the novels by William Leonard Marshall. As an acknowledgement
to the drama, I have incorporated a cameo scene depicting a bank robbery
in progress, which is about to be tackled by a squad of armed officers.
A welcome contrast is located nearby in the serene surrounding of the
big Buddha statue, which bears a strong resemblance to the Tian Tan
Buddha of the Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island. Other items of interest
include the China Motor Bus museum (another flight of fancy).
